The Condors Baseball Team by LaVergne Novak — Excerpt: In the mid-1930s, a group of boys and girls were playing baseball in a field on the west side of Grove Avenue, north of the Illinois Central Railroad tracks. Some “big guys” came along and chased them off the field because they wanted to use it. Disappointed, the young teens, all of whom lived within two or three blocks of each other, decided to make a baseball field of their own. There was a large, empty lot on the west side of Oak Park Avenue adjacent to the north side of the railroad tracks that looked like the perfect spot. They agreed that the next day they would get to work. They brought sickles, scythes, spades…
