Dear BHS Members and Supporters:

As you may know, we are in the process of renovating a building at 1401 Grove Ave, to be the new headquarters for the Berwyn Historical Society. We have requested that the City of Berwyn include a line item of $5000 in the City’s 2012 budget to subsidize our work. That amount was included in past years, but was discontinued 2-3 years ago.

Having read the proposed 2012 budget online, we are dismayed to see that we are not included. However, you can help! Please contact your Alderman TODAY to request that the stipend we’ve asked for be included in the 2012 budget. The Budget hearing and vote will take place this Tuesday, March 13. Your Alderman’s e-mail address can be found online at: www.berwyn-il.gov Click on Find Elected Officials.

Below is a sample e-mail which I’ve sent to Mayor Lovero and the Aldermen. You may borrow information from this for your personal request via e-mail or phone. But please contact your Alderman regarding this, to help keep the BHS on sound financial footing.

Thank you.

David Olson
President, Berwyn Historical Society

SAMPLE E-MAIL:

Dear Mayor Lovero, City Aldermen, City Clerk, and City Treasurer:

On looking through the proposed 2012 budget online, I do not find the Berwyn Historical Society included. We had requested the reinstatement of $5000 a year, which was given for several years in the past. Unless I’m missing it, this item does not appear to be included in the 2012 budget.

The BHS is in the process of renovating our new headquarters building at 1401 Grove Ave, and we expect to begin moving in before summer. The renovation has cost more than we anticipated, but we will soon have a quality building with a new furnace, new electrical wiring and plumbing, a waterproofed basement, newly-tuckpointed exterior, new windows, etc. We have made a considerable investment to rehabilitate a formerly-blighted building. It will be something for the neighborhood and the City of Berwynto be proud of. I hope the City is willing to invest the modest amount requested in support of our accomplishments and efforts for the community.

Thank you for your consideration.

David Olson
President, Berwyn Historical Society

Berwyn becomes a magical place as people share their vision of beauty and meaning with others. It’s a good time to remember how we have been blessed in our community.

The Berwyn Historical Society celebrates the past, commits to the present, and believes in the future of Berwyn. Sunday, Nov. 13, 2:00-4:00 p.m., to be held at the Fitzgerald’s Side Bar, at 6615 Roosevelt Road.

We will present illustrations and information on our new BHS site at 1401 Grove Avenue, and will detail the progress we’re making in the renovation of the space for office, storage and display of our historical artifacts. We hope to be in the building by early 2012. Being in our own building for the first time ever will help create new opportunities for education and interpretation of Berwyn’s history.

We will also hear reports of the BHS activities throughout the past year, and have the election of officers – three for a full three-year term, and one for a one-year term, to fill a vacancy on the Board.

We encourage you to renew your BHS membership for 2012 on that day, and bring along friends who may be interested in joining our organization.

A cash bar will be available, and light refreshments will be served.

We hope to see you at the Annual Meeting, November 13.

As you may know, we have recently acquired a new home at 1401 Grove. The building is currently undergoing renovations and we hope to be moved in before the end of the year. Along with our new home, come new responsibilities. We now have a mortgage, utilities and other expenses, just like a homeowner!

On Wed., Sept. 28, David Olson, BHS Pres., and Kristine Dillon, Vice Pres., hosted about 30 residents and staff members of Plymouth Place in LaGrange Park, on a bus tour past Berwyn bungalows.

The 45-minute tour featured bungalows on Riverside Drive, Maple Ave, and Home Avenue, as well as four of the Berwyn properties on the National Register of Historic Places.

Mention was also made of the numerous neighborhood grocery stores which Berwyn had in the 30s, and the tour passed the new site of the BHS, to be housed in one of those former grocery and meat markets at 14th St. and Grove Ave.

At the request of one of the participants who had lived in Berwyn, we drove by the home he had lived in at 13th and Euclid, which happened to be in the area we were touring.

The group appeared to enjoy the tour very much, and we may host another group from Plymouth Place in the near future. The tour provided a “trial run” for future groups who may desire such a tour.
